What the site needed

Agri Technovation runs a laboratory in the Wellington Industrial Zone. Testing cannot stop for load-shedding or power outages, so every outage meant running a generator, buying diesel and risking lost work.

The demand charges were the biggest problem to solve. A standard solar installation would have added value, but missed a huge opportunity of savings.

What we built

  • A 130 kWp rooftop array with 120 kWh of battery storage, enough to carry the laboratory through four hours of load-shedding.
  • Sigenergy inverters that shave the site’s peak demand, so most of the tariff saving comes off the demand charge.
  • Zero-millisecond changeover when the grid drops, so testing carries on without interruption.
  • Every unit the panels produce is used on site.
  • The generator no longer runs to cover outages.

Solar installation results in numbers

Agri Technovation bought the solar plant outright. The grid bill fell by 96% in the first year, and the plant paid for itself in 4 years 1 month.

From the project’s own cash-flow projection: the bill before and after the plant, and the build price paid in 2025. The grid bill falls from R736 688 to R27 116 in the first year.

“We were paying just over R61 000 a month to keep this laboratory running. The plant carries almost all of it now.”

Glossary
Demand charge
The part of a business electricity bill based on the highest power the site draws in the month, separate from the energy it uses.
Notified maximum demand
The capacity a site has agreed with its supplier. Going over it adds a charge to the bill.
Peak and time-of-use
Electricity costs more per unit in the weekday morning and evening peaks. A battery charged off-peak covers those hours.
Embedded generation
Power produced on your own site, connected on your side of the meter.
Distribution board
The electrical board the solar plant connects into.
Section 12B
A tax allowance that lets a business deduct the cost of a solar plant it owns, up to 1 MW, in the first year.
